I apologize ahead of time for the structure (or lack thereof) of this blog. Its purpose is threefold:
1. To serve as an outlet for my thoughts and feelings of public policy issues
2. To document and archive my experiences in public service; and
3. To help better answer the question “What exactly do I want to do?”
As an unemployed and unattached public servant, I find it very difficult to feel unable to turn my thoughts into action, and increasingly frustrating to be sitting on my hands as I search for full-time employment. I want to start doing whatever I am to do now.
(You can start feeling sorry for the poor people who live with me and see me on a daily basis; they must endure the seemingly-endless thoughts I have on every political issue of the day.)
I feel that this unfortunate economic climate is teaching me a kind of patience that can only bode well for my desired career in government work. For the time being, I am a full-time, unpaid intern in the Mayor’s office. Some think I am crazy for taking an unpaid position with a Master’s Degree. Others feel the need to pity console me and feel the need to remind me that “times are hard” and that “something will turn up” in the near future. Frankly, I am thrilled that I am finally getting some real hands-on experience in the field I so desire. My particular position carries much more responsibility than a typical intern in the field and I have already learned so much in the short time I have worked at the office.
While it would be nice to bring home a paycheck for my 40+ hour weeks, I always leave feeling satisfied with what work I have performed. I love what I am doing and feel even more certain I am heading into the right career field. Call me crazy/irresponsible, but I truly believe that happiness in what you do is worth more than the salary it pays (I am a true testament to this…my salary is $0). I am so fortunate that I have a strong support network of family and friends that make this temporary arrangement possible.
I invite you to follow me along my journey to becoming a public servant. The road is seemingly long and sparsely traveled, but sure to include plenty of humor and sarcasm if I have anything to do with it. My two cats also love keyboards, so be on the lookout for “kitty kontributions” sporadically throughout my posts.
Until next time,
Your Humble Public Servant
